Instructor Interviews

With Michael Watson

How were you first introduced to yoga?

  • During a major transition in my life, a therapist suggested that I get back in touch with my body in a way that I did when I was a dancer. I haven’t danced or been in real contact with my body for over a decade.  The practice of Asana came to me quickly.

What made you decide to move beyond being a student to become a teacher?

  • I am a big believer that the universe has stage direction for your life, you just have to be open to hear it. All the signs were pointing me in the direction to become a teacher of yoga and continue my journey of healing. Mediation made and continues to make the direction that universe is giving me more clear and sharper.

What were you doing before you taught yoga?

  • I was an Account Executive for a major American fashion design company. Even though this was not the path I continued on, I am very grateful for the all the lessons that fashion industry taught me from an early age. The main lesson were how to communicate clearly and having a strong work ethic. Also: be on time, be prepared and NEVER complain.

How has your yoga practice changed since you began?

  • Immensely. I am much more focused on embodying my practice rather than “doing” a practice. The practice has evolved into a deeper connection with my Spirit rather than my mind.

Is there a particular aspect of yoga you are especially intrigued with right now?

  • I am currently intrigued with my Focus and my endless pursuit towards control.

What else have you studied in depth?

  • Fashion and design are my first loves in life and continues to be a constant source of inspiration.

What are some of your other practices or passions?

  • Music and dance have saved my life more times than I can count. Both have an equal importance towards my passion for a full experience of what this life can offer.

When you really need grounding what do you do?

  • I take walks in nature. Barefoot if possible. Swimming naked is a pallet cleanser for my soul.
